Q&A with DC-based Moonshine Society- fresh music school graduates to deliver soulful blues and old school R&B.
"Listening to the music of blues artists from today and the past has carried me and shown me that no one has a perfect life, men and women have felt what I’ve felt for decades, and that through our human experiences and hardest moments we are not alone."
(Blues.gr)
“This week I had the pleasure of speaking with Jenny Langer of Moonshine Society about blues legend Johnny Winter on Chasing The Blues Podcast. Listen to the episode on Spotify or your favorite #podcast app!”

When three friends from Berklee College of Music got together in 2009, they never dreamed their style of high-energy roots rock, soulful blues and New Orleans R&B would one day have them touring the world.
Take one part soul-soaked, soaring female vocals, one part blues-soaked rock guitar, add a dash of New Orleans jazz horns, sprinkle on some funky bass and shake it all up with internationally acclaimed musicians, and you get the Moonshine Society sound!
Since giving themselves the name Moonshine Society after toasting with drinks under the moon in Washington, DC, they've taken their blues to Asia, Cuba and all over the US. No synthesized sounds, no backing tracks, no auto-tune; everything the band plays is live, including Hammond B3 sounds coming out of the keyboard's Leslie box.
"Grips your soul and rocks it".
(The Boston Herald)
The band has not only cultivated its own modern take on traditional styles, but also created a community of musicians who are all part of the Society. Lead singer Jenny Langer (better known as Black Betty) sees this as her band's greatest strength in an era when synthetic sounds rather than human players are heard on the radio.
"A show not to be missed"
(Delta Airlines Sky Magazine)
In 2012, three members were inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame for their work with legendary harmonica player Charlie Sayles. They opened shows for artists such as Johnny Winter, Roomful of Blues, Tower of Power, The Nighthawks, Tab Benoit and many others. Hall of Fame guitarist Joe Poppen on guitar is a master of the vintage sound and impresses with his fabulous solos.
Harmonica wizard and BMA award winner Jason Ricci continues to bring new facets to the band's songs with his rocking and soulful playing. Rodney Duntons (drums) and Tod Ellsworth (bass) round out this outstanding DC-based formation. The award-winning, internationally acclaimed blues and R&B band knows how to win over their audiences, whether on the big stage or in the club. It's easy to see why Moonshine Society is always in the mix for the Washington Area Blues Society is always in the mix!
A red-hot mama with vocals that write the blues the way you like to hear it. Roots rockers Moonshine Society are convincing all the way and know how to wow an audience.

"The sound: Modern blues that grabs hold of your soul and rocks it."
(Boston Herald)
"A Don't Miss Show"- Shanghai, China
(Sky Magazine (Delta Airlines))
"Saucy singer and her band serve up a soulful mix."
(The News Journal)
"A fascinating mix of blues, blues-rock, and soul."
(In A Blue Mood)
"From the start of the album, Jenny demonstrates her remarkable vocal range; belting out tunes that would make even the likes of Koko Taylor, Etta James and Big Mama Thornton sit up and take notice."
(Reflections in Blue)
"Being someone who is hearing [Jenny] for the very first time, I'm being totally blown away right now...Put me on one of those music awards committees and I'm nominating "Come On Home" for song of the year..."
(Mary4Music)
"...if you love Bonnie Raitt and Tedeschi Trucks Band, but also Little Walter's old school blues, you guessed it, you're in the right place!"
(Soundguardian)
"...No strangers to rubbing elbows with the crème of the crop, the mixture of chops and penumbra really kicks ass. With a leading lady that’s really leading the way, this crew knows how to make Koko Taylor and Willie Dixon smile down upon them."
(Midwest Record Review)
"[Jenny] may be young in age, but she's really an old soul...she is just as serious about exploring the roots and rituals of pinup culture, much as a young guitarist might mine old LPs for vintage Delta blues riffs... Fronting Moonshine Society, she draws inspiration from Janis Joplin and Koko Taylor . But she layers on plenty of cheesecake, too, creating a vibe at once sonic and sartorial...."
(The Boston Globe)
“What a voice!”
(BBC Radio Wales Janice Long Show)
“Moonshine Society- [An] act known to eat headliners alive...Jenny Langer is the kind of cultured blues shouter you could watch all night.”
(Classic Rock Magazine)
Singer Jenny Langer is simply an experience!
(Guitar & Bass)
“Washington DC’s Moonshine Society appear to be on a mission, driven by front woman, songwriter and producer Jenny Langer, to expel blues music’s often sexist past through the likes of the
gloriously powerful title track, ‘Sweet Thing’, from the album of the same name. All power to her.”
(RnR Magazine)
“One of the fieriest rhythm & blues bands on the current scene & what sets them apart is the sensational singing of Jenny Langer, a lady whose rich, soulful, sweet-&-sour tones
capture the spirit of Etta James - or if you prefer, Janis Joplin stripped of the vocal excesses. Jenny & co. conjure up the spirit of the greats of the past without ever copying
them.”
(Echoes Magazine)
“This is an outstanding record by a band who have promised to come to the UK when the pandemic allows. I’m in the queue! Jenny’s got a fabulous voice.”
(Blues in the south)
“Great powerful vocals in just the right places - and tuneful.”
(Hayes FM)
“The British Blues scene will surely take this to their hearts once this very classy album gets airtime & is covered by the blues mags. Perfect for UK blues festivals.”
(Music Republic Mag. Online)
“A brilliant album of original material and tasteful covers.”
(Bluestownmusic.nl)
“It’s not every album that just grips from the off, this one does. It’s a Sweet Thing start to finish, tempting you to start all over again, enjoying every sultry, salty morsel”
(Rhythm & Booze)
"Powerhouse blues rock with many other influences from soul, jazz and rock, but what makes it stand out from the crowd is of course Jenny's great voice"
